Il-Kalanka Bay

A hidden cove

Il-Kalanka is a small, hidden cove on Malta's southern coast, between Marsaxlokk and Delimara Point. Surrounded on all sides by white limestone cliffs, it is invisible from the road and accessible only on foot (about 15 minutes' walk from parking). This keeps it one of Malta's secret swimming spots.

A swimmer's paradise

The water in the cove is crystal clear, with underwater visibility up to 20 metres. The seabed is rocky with attractive underwater formations, ideal for snorkelling. The absence of waves (the bay is sheltered by cliffs) and calm water attract swimmers from spring to late autumn.

No infrastructure

Il-Kalanka has no infrastructure whatsoever: no sunbeds, bars, lifeguards, or toilets. It is a beach in its purest form, for people seeking silence and contact with nature. Entry to the water from flat rocks is easy, though water shoes are recommended.

Practical tip: Drive to Smart City Malta (Kalkara), then walk along the coast. Bring shade (a parasol or beach tent), water, and food. Zero infrastructure. Best on weekdays; slightly busier at weekends.
