Rocky platforms

Riviera Bay is an informal name for the rocky swimming platforms on the northern edge of Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, above the main beach. Instead of descending 200 steps to the sand, you can climb down to flat rocks by the cliff and swim in deep, clear water without the crowds.

Sunbathing on rock

The platforms are popular with local Maltese, who prefer flat rock to sand. The rocks heat up in the sun like natural loungers. Water entry is from flat steps or by jumping in (depth immediately 2-3 metres). Snorkelling here is excellent: fish and octopus swim along the cliff rock face.

Silence and distance

No infrastructure (no sunbeds, bars, or lifeguards) and the need to walk across rocks deter tourists. Those who stay seek silence and connection with the sea without commercialism. It is one of the western coast's hidden swimming spots.

Practical tip: Park at the cliff above Golden Bay, then walk 10 minutes north along the clifftop. Shoes with grip essential on the rocks. Bring water and a parasol (zero shade). Do not swim in strong westerly wind.
