Malta's golden sand

Golden Bay (Il-Bajja tal-Mixquqa) is one of Malta's few sandy beaches, located on the northwest coast between Mgarr and Mellieha. A wide arc of golden sand, turquoise water, and easy access by car and bus (line 44 from Valletta) make it one of the island's most popular beaches.

Beach infrastructure

Unlike many Maltese beaches, Golden Bay has full infrastructure: lifeguards (in season), sunbeds and parasols for hire, a beach bar, showers, and toilets. The Radisson Golden Sands hotel sits directly on the beach. This makes it ideal for families and those who value convenience.

Sunsets

Golden Bay faces west, making it one of Malta's best sunset spots. In the evenings, especially in summer, crowds gather on the beach and cliffs to watch the sun sink into the Mediterranean. The hotel offers dinner with sunset views, but the sunset itself is free and equally beautiful from the beach.

Practical tip: Sunbed about EUR 10/day (2026). Paid parking (EUR 3/day). Ghajn Tuffieha is 10 minutes' walk and much quieter. Bus 44 from Valletta takes about 45 minutes.
