Perseus versus the Kraken

The original 1981 "Clash of the Titans" starring Harry Hamlin as Perseus, with legendary Ray Harryhausen responsible for the stop-motion special effects, used Gozo's Azure Window as the backdrop for one of fantasy cinema's most iconic scenes. The final sequence, in which Perseus uses Medusa's head to turn the Kraken to stone and save Andromeda, was filmed at the Azure Window.

Malta as ancient Greece

Malta and Gozo were perfectly suited to recreate ancient Greece on screen. Dwejra's limestone cliffs, the natural Azure Window arch, and the island's wild landscape convincingly imitated the legendary coastlines of Greek mythology. The film also used locations on Malta, including Fort Ricasoli.

Gozo's film heritage

Though the Azure Window no longer exists, Gozo and Malta remain popular filming locations. Over 100 films and series have been shot on the islands, including Gladiator, Troy, Game of Thrones, Assassin's Creed, and Ridley Scott's Napoleon.
