Malta as Westeros
Malta and Gozo were among the first overseas filming locations for HBO's Game of Thrones. The entire first season (2011) used Maltese locations for scenes in King's Landing, Pentos, and the Dothraki coast. Gozo played a key role thanks to its dramatic landscapes.
Daenerys's wedding at the Azure Window
The most famous scene shot on Gozo is the wedding of Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo on the coast of Pentos in the series' first episode, "Winter Is Coming". The Azure Window at Dwejra provided a spectacular backdrop for the Dothraki wedding feast. The scene was filmed in 2010, seven years before the arch collapsed.
Other Maltese Game of Thrones locations
On Malta (the main island), even more Season 1 scenes were shot: Fort Manoel as the Great Sept of Baelor (Ned Stark's execution), Mdina as King's Landing, Fort Ricasoli, and San Anton Palace. From Season 2 onward, production moved mainly to Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Practical tip: Though the Azure Window has fallen, visit Dwejra and imagine the Dothraki wedding against the cliffs. On Malta, visit Fort Manoel and Mdina's gate to see King's Landing in real life.
