Natural Salt Pans

On the southern part of Comino, in a shallow terrain depression, lie natural salt pans. Seawater flooding in during storms leaves water that slowly evaporates in the sun, leaving salt crystals. For centuries, Comino's residents harvested salt here — the island's only "export commodity."

In spring (March-May), the ponds transform into a birdwatcher's paradise. Migratory birds flying from Africa to Europe stop here to rest — you can spot herons, stilts, and even rare flamingos. BirdLife Malta organises observation trips with binoculars.
